Scientific Name: Heterodon nasicus
Plains Hognose Snakes, formerly and still frequently called Western Hognose Snakes, are a small, stout species of North American Colubrid. They get their name from the upturned end of their snouts, and use their noses to dig in their dry, sandy habitats.
DO HOGNOSE SNAKES MAKE GOOD PETS? Yes! Hognose snakes are some of the best pets for reptile enthusiasts. They are a smaller species of snake, and take up less room than a lot of bigger species. That combined with the wide variety of beautiful morphs, their adorable faces, and the fact that they can play dead, it’s no surprise that Western hognose snakes are becoming more and more popular as pets. In captivity most plains hognose snakes feast readily on rodents, with periods of “food strikes” being common for several weeks at a time for some snakes.
At Creature Farm, we have a small group of hognose snakes that we are currently raising up to breed in the future. Current genetics we are working with are albino, arctic, conda/superconda, axanthic, and snow.
